Meditation for the Earth Element

Meditation for the Earth Element

07 Sep 2016

Visualization is a helpful tool for "programming" yourself for happiness, health and self assurance, especially during the transition periods between the seasons and the main seasonal transitional time of Late Summer. This when we move from the Yang outward phases of Spring and Sumer to internal Yin phases of Autumn and Winter. We need time for looking inside and collecting ourselves before the next phase begins. People who fail to do this may have a tendency to burn out, particularly if they have low self worth and have relied on knowing themselves through what they do rather than who they are.

Visualization involves using your imagination to create pictures of yourself exactly as you would like to be, healthy, happy, feeling good about yourself and satisfied with life. It creates a different frame of mind which makes a desired change possible. The elemental spirit of the Earth element is called Yi, which means to think things over and develop the power to create using the intension using the mind.

Below is an example of a visualization practice, which will have the best results if practiced daily. You may find it helpful to read the instructions into a tape recorder, using a calm and relaxed voice, and play it back to yourself when you are ready to practice the techniques.

Begin by establishing a relaxed state by turning on the para-sympathetic nervous system by taking three long, slow and deep breaths. Allow yourself to become aware of what your are feeling as you inhale and exhale.

  • How do you feel as you breathe?
  • What if the temperature of the air that you draw into your nostrils?
  • Feel your chest rising and falling
  • Feel a little pause between the inhalation and the exhalation, like the transition phases between outward and inwards phases.
  • Continue you to relax and breathe deeply, and then count backwards from ten to one.

Now that you are relaxed and centred, allow yourself to from a mental picture on the screen of the mind. See yourself looking and feeling exactly how you would like to be. Let the picture of a healthy, confident, successful and satisfied self be as complete as you can make it (this will become progressively easier the more you practice) Hold on to this imagine as long as you wish and allow the feeling produced by the image in the mind to permeate all your cells. Remember your mind is like a radio transmitter tuning into to what you want or desire.

When you have finished, let the image fade and slowly open your eyes. Concentrate on taking a few more deep, relaxed breaths into the abdomen. Be aware of the way you feel and how this has changed since the beginning of the visualization.
